The Australian Surfing Hall Of Fame was established by Surfing Australia to recognize and celebrate the lives and outstanding achievements of Australia’s leading surfers.
Annually, one Australian surfer is inducted into the hall and this is done through a process of nominations and a voting panel that includes previous inductees and eminent members of the Australian surfing community. The Australian Surfing Hall of Fame Awards were first convened in 1985 by the Australian Surfriders Association (now Surfing Australia) to preserve the History of Australian Surfing and honour its greats.
Surf World is the world’s largest surfing museum and houses the Australian Surfing Hall of Fame.
Surf World opened in December 1993, a consequence of the vision and planning of local Torquay surfers, Surfing Australia (formally ASA), surf industry, and local government bodies and supported by the Australian Government.
This facility is now a major tourist venue, and has generated world wide interest. In May 1994, the international Surfing Association voted to recognise Surf World Australia as a centre of historical surfing significance.
Nominations for and induction into the Australian Surfing Hall of Fame, which celebrates a lasting major influence on our sport, is undertaken by a voting panel comprising:
All inducted members of the Hall of Fame
Historians- Peter Troy, Bob Smith and David Sumpter
National Women’s Surfing Director- Sandra English & Carlie Thornton
This panel also makes nominations for and inducts into the Australia Surfing Hall of Fame Honour Roll, which recognises individual contributors to Australian Surfing in a range of specific fields.
